Our accreditation

We have worked tirelessly to become one of the most credentialed height safety companies in Australia. We are dedicated to ensuring that everything we do exceeds industry best practice in every facet, and are dedicated to transparency and accountability in all parts of our work.

The National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) has accredited HSE for compliance with ISO/IEC 17020 as a Type C Inspection Body. The scope of our NATA accreditation is the broadest of any in the height safety industry in Australia. Through this accreditation, HSE’s clients can be assured that our testing and reporting on their height safety system is thorough, unbiased and completely independent.

Our team has also worked hard to gain certification in ISO 9001 Quality Management System and ISO45001 OH&S Management System.

Height Safety Engineers are also proud members of the Working at Heights Association of Australia. Through WAHA, we work with industry partners to help improve safety across all aspects of working at heights.

At Height Safety Engineers we protect people. That goes beyond just providing safety services to our clients. We look after our team, and strive to be leaders in giving back and supporting the wider community.

HSE History

Height Safety Engineers has been providing industry-leading people protection for two decades now, but our history goes back even further.

Height Safety Engineers actually began life as the Elbon partnership in 1985. Back then, the company undertook architectural and engineering design work for residential, commercial and industrial projects. They also worked on fit-outs for medical centres, day surgery clinics as well as more traditional office layouts.

Quickly the business grew and the Elbon team found itself taking on project and construction management for those buildings it was designing and fitting out. This is where the idea that services should be complete and holistic began for the Elbon team.

In the early 2000s, Elbon further expanded its service offering to include design and testing services for height safety and fall protection systems.

Elbon brought on additional partners to join in this new service.

To further improve the integrated height safety services offered, Elbon was accredited as a registered training organisation (RTO 91227) in 2006 offering the course “work safely at heights”.

It was this same year the name Height Safety Engineers (HSE) was fully acquired and brought to market.

With the registration complete, HSE expanded its scope of training courses to include white card (general induction), first aid, and competencies related to working in and around confined spaces.

Over the next decade, the Elbon group continued to grow and expand. Acquired in 2014, Australian Safety Systems brought expanded offerings in permanent height safety systems.

Further expansion was undertaken in 2016 with the Firefect training company, based in Dubbo, joining. Firefect increased the footprint of the training services into regional NSW and complemented the Sydney-based HSE team.

2017 saw the HSE brand expand into Victoria, with the company establishing a Melbourne office.

During this rapid period of expansion, the Elbon group was also improving its procedures, practices and the accreditations.

The group achieved certification in ISO 9001 (Quality Management System) and AS/NZS 4801 (OH&S Management Systems) across 2016 and 2017.

Elbon groups proudest achieve, however, was the Elbon recertification department becoming accredited by NATA for compliance with ISO/IEC 17020 as a Type C Inspection Body. To this day, the scope of this accreditation is the broadest of any in the height safety industry in Australia.

A memorandum of understand, signed in 2018 with the Working at Heights Association installed Elbon as the representative of the body on the SF-015 Australian Standards Committee. In this role, Elbon contributes to the drafting and ongoing review of Australian and New Zealand standards related to working at heights and fall protection.

Having operated as three distinct brands – Height Safety Engineers, Australian Safety Systems and Firefect – the operations of the Elbon group were unified in July 2020 under the Height Safety Engineers brand.

Having all parts of the Elbon group operating under a single brand will assist in demonstrating to our clients that HSE is best placed to offer services to ensure people are protected at work.
