CPCCDE3014 Remove non-friable asbestos

This two-day course equips students with the skills and knowledge required to obtain a SafeWork licence for the removal of non-friable asbestos. In NSW, this course is required to be undertaken to remove more than 10m² of non-friable asbestos.

Nationally recognised training logo.

Although it has not been used in construction since the 1980s, asbestos and asbestos containing materials remain a significant workplace safety risk today. Its widespread use and longevity mean that many older buildings can still contain significant amounts of asbestos.

Exposure to asbestos can cause significant, and in many cases, fatal illnesses including mesothelioma and other cancers. Undertaking renovation or demolition work on a building constructed prior to its banning can involve needing to disturb or remove asbestos.

While working with any amount of asbestos can present serious risks when not done by a competent person, if the amount of non-friable (or bonded) asbestos being removed equals 10m² or more, then it is a legal requirement in NSW that this competency be held by the person undertaking the work.

Non-friable asbestos comes in many forms and is commonly found in the form of asbestos cement sheeting. These sheets were used as wall cladding, roof cladding, as backing material in wet areas like bathrooms, laundries and kitchens, as well as in some fencing materials.

Please note participants in this course are required to have previously completed CPCCWHS1001 Prepare to work in the construction industry before they can undertake training in this course. Please see below for additional prerequisite and course entry requirements.

Not removing asbestos?

If you are not removing asbestos or asbestos contaminated materials, you may still need to be competent in identifying areas of possible asbestos contamination. Training in this can be obtained through the nationally recognised training in asbestos awareness course – 11084NAT Course in asbestos awareness.

Completing the 11084NAT Course in Asbestos Awareness is mandatory in the ACT for all workers who are reasonably likely to work with asbestos or ACMs. Although other jurisdictions do not require this training, HSE recommends avoiding non-accredited asbestos awareness training as certificates from these courses may not be recognised by some employers, PCBUs or job sites.

Height Safety Engineers also recommends 10852NAT Course in working safely with asbestos containing materials, as a follow-up to the asbestos awareness training course. This course gives participants the skills and knowledge needed to safely cut into, drill into or undertake other minor works on asbestos sheeting and other asbestos containing materials.

Like the asbestos awareness course, the working safely with asbestos containing materials training is a requirement to be undertaken by those working in a range of different occupations, before they are allowed to undertake work in the Australian Capital Territory.

For comprehensive asbestos safety training, HSE strongly recommends students undertaking 11084NAT Course in asbestos awareness also complete 10852NAT Course in working safely with asbestos containing materials.
